In May 1973 we opened the Farm Gate as a weekend and Bank Holiday enterprise selling farm fresh food. As well as providing a use for some of the redundant farm buildings our intention was to provide local employment. Our guest of honour at the opening ceremony was Jack Hargreaves, a well known broadcaster on the countryside. The following is a cutting from the Hampshire Telegraph.
We fitted out the interior of the shop with large-scale photographs from the farm.
And we commissioned a special 'Farm Gate' identity!
Farm shops were less common in 1972 than they are today as this headline from The Hampshire Telegraph of the time suggests.
Here is a photograph of our Farm Gate Manager, Philly Holloway, standing behind our display of Warnford watercress!
